Episode 2 – Germanium & Silicon Guitar Pedals

Is there any effect for the electric guitar as iconic as fuzz? In this video we blast off with four different types of fuzz that provides sounds ranging from warm, subtle boost to velvety velcro to sputtering Tesla coil to thermonuclear war! There are many different types of fuzz, so if you’ve heard one and tried one and decided it’s not for you, that doesn’t mean you won’t like other types of fuzz. In this video I’m going to compare and showcase several different types, including:

  1. Analogwise Dead Man Walking multi-stage germanium fuzz
  2. DOD Carcosa silicon fuzz
  3. Behringer SF300 octave fuzz
  4. Way Huge Pork & Pickle muff-style fuzz and British preamp for bass guitars (but also works great with regular guitars!)

I try these pedals out with a variety of guitars:

Finally, I record a short, moody piece relying on the soulful warmth and dynamic versatility of the Dead Man Walking, paired with the subtle movement and space provided by tremolo in the Walrus Mako Series M1 modulation pedal, with a little mastering help via Slate Digital’s free Fresh Air plugin.
