Episode 8 – Infinity and Beyond (EBow & TC Infinite Sample Sustainer GUITAR PEDAL)

We’ve explored how to increase sustain with compressors, and how to extend our sound using time effects like echo, but today we are going to infinity and beyond, using tools such as the EBow and TC Infinite Sample Sustainer to make our guitar sounds last… forever.

EBow

One tried-and-true method of achieving infinite sustain to have an ongoing sound is the classic EBow. So I go over this classic tool first, but there are now alternatives that use the same concept, including the Joyo Infinite Sustainer and the TC Electronic Aeon.

Effect Pedals

Another method of achieving a freeze, hold, or infinite sustain of your guitar sounds is via effect pedals. There are a variety of guitar pedals that do this. One of the first well-known ones was the EHX Freeze, and this functionality was later built into the more full-featured Superego Plus, as well. However, there have been great improvements to this concept in recent years, which can be seen in pedals such as the Gamechanger Plus. But in my opinion, the pedal that does it best – and with a pretty affordable price tag, as well – is the TC Electronic Infinite Sample Sustainer!

TC Infinite Sample Sustainer

I do a deep dive into the features and functions of the TC Infinite Sample Sustainer, but especially the extended control and capabilities offered by the TonePrint app, which allows you to customize everything from knob functions to 9 types of modulation and 14 styles of reverb, and more!

Song Recording: Infinity by the XX

In the last part of the video, I outline the composition and recording/production process I used for doing a lofi chiptune-style cover of Infinity by the XX. For this, I used EBow, TC Infinite Sample Sustainer, and Synthcart, a cartridge by Paul Slocum that turns an Atari 2600 into a synthesizer and rhythm sequencer!
